Hands-on Discovery in the Outdoor Classroom
Fun Stuff!
"I believe in getting out. I believe in sharing the world with the kids and opening their eyes. I hear from parents years afterwards how much of an effect it had on the kids." -Sue Jacox, Creator of Great Basin Outdoor School
Mission: to ignite children's passion for learning and foster cooperation, respect and responsibility through hands-on discovery in the outdoor classroom.
Children learn during four-day field programs, building academic and social skills and developing their understanding of the natural world. Fifth and sixth grade classes, high school and college students, and teachers study local ecology with
state standards-based lessons at Camp Galilee on the shore of Lake Tahoe and other local camps during spring, fall, and winter programs. Service-learning projects and place-based education help develop a commitment to sustainability and a connection to the earth. GBOS relies upon assistance from businesses and other organizations to maintain the ability to offer its programs to children of families from all income levels.
