Cabin Leaders receive three hours of training on site during their week of attendance, and participate in a two hour training before the session.

Your school's support of the leadership program is very important. Schools provide a volunteer contact, a meeting place for the training, may waive the 4 day absence, and may award .5 community service credit.

Since 1995 teens have lead 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students and their teachers in standards-based hands-on learning experiences in a residential camp setting as "Cabin Leaders." This is a volunteer position which involves providing a fun, safe, and inclusive environment while supervising a group of younger students at night and various times of the day during a session of outdoor school. Cabin leaders put their group to bed at night, assist naturalists during activities, help their cabin group with creating a skit, and may lead an evening activity.

Cabin Leaders in Costume

Cabin Leader applicants must be 16 years of age or older at the time of the program. We occasionally allow younger teens to participate, as "cabin leaders in training" who work all week paired with an older cabin leader. Great Basin Outdoor School also occasionally utilizes high school graduates, college students, parents and family members as cabin leaders.

Prospective cabin leaders should submit an application, along with the rest of the cabin leader packet, and contact us to attend a training or information session.
