Fundraising Ideas

Caveat: GBOS is sensitive to the issue of over-consumption and thoughtless consumerism, and this is among the many topics in our educational program. So we are not encouraging anyone to buy things that they do not need. What these fundraising ideas do is to take advantage of purchases that would be made in any case. Since GBOS does not itself participate in any of these programs, we cannot recommend one over another or fill you in on all the benefits and pitfalls of each program. We can confirm that all of these is are reputable commercial or nonprofit concerns. Please look at each program in detail to determine if it works for your school.

Scrip Programs

Scrip programs are the ideal fundraising method because they don't require students to sell anything (except the idea!), and funds are raised from purchasing activities that families and supporters already take part in, such as shopping at the grocery store. eScrip returns money based on credit card purchases at local businesses. SchoolCash covers online purchases. Paper Scrip is used by buying gift certificates (for use by the purchaser or as a gift) from which a percentage is returned to the school. eScrip and SchoolCash are particularly popular because they require almost no paperwork on the part of the school - families and supporters sign themselves up. Though the percentage returned varies with the program and merchant, from 2 to 30 percent of every purchase is returned to the school. PTO today (parent teacher organization online magazine) has a good introductory article at http://www.ptotoday.com/0301scrip.html.

Other Programs

Box Tops for Education: Traditional box top clipping, online purchasing, and a Visa Card.
Campbell's Labels for Education: For the past 28 years, Campbell's Labels for Education™ program has been giving schools free educational equipment in exchange for labels from various Campbell's products. It's a fun, easy program where students, families and members of the community join together for a common goal!
Fremont Elementary School in Carson City sold cookie dough for their fundraiser, and it was very successful.
